Charlie Nicolas | After Dinner And Speaking Engagements

Charlie Nicholas is a former professional footballer who was born in Glasgow in 1961. He played as a striker and is well known for his time spent at Celtic Football Club. He also played for Arsenal, Aberdeen and Clyde football clubs. One of the most gifted players of his generation, he also represented Scotland - making a total of twenty international appearances for the team and scoring five goals. Charlie had a flamboyant and stylish way of playing and earned himself a reputation of being a goal scoring sensation.

Football Career
Charlie's career began in 1979 when he signed for Celtic - his debut for the club was in 1980 in a game against Kilmarnock. He was a talented young player who showed great promise. As a result he quickly established himself as an important member of the squad, and his talent in front of the goal did certainly not go unnoticed. In fact in the 1982-1983 season he scored an impressive fifty goals (twenty nine of which were in the league) and this was justifiably recognised when he received the awards 'Scottish Footballer of the Year' and 'Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year'. At one point he seemed unstoppable and unsurprisingly he was adored by the Celtic fans. They loved his showmanship and personality!

In 1983 he moved to north London club Arsenal (Liverpool and Manchester United had also shown an interest in him). During his time with the Gunners he scored a total of fifty four goals, two of which were for the team during the League Cup final over Liverpool in 1987. Thanks to Charlie's two goals Arsenal came back from being behind to win the trophy (Ian Rush had opened the scoring for Liverpool)!

In 1988 he returned to his homeland when he moved to Aberdeen. He played well for the Dons and helped them win the Scottish Cup in 1990. He stayed there for a couple of years before going back to where it had all begun - Celtic. This second stint at Celtic lasted for five years. In his complete Celtic career he scored dozens of goals and is remembered by fans as a gifted and loyal player. He left on a free transfer to Clyde where he was to score five goals in one season before entering retirement.

Charlie was proud to play for Scotland and earned a total of twenty caps for his team.
